How the USD/LKR Rate Quietly Changes Your Gold Payout

Two sellers, two identical chains, two different weeks — and a noticeably different payout, even though the world gold price barely moved. The explanation is almost always the exchange rate.
The conversion chain
Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. To reach a local rate you divide the dollar price by 31.1035 to get dollars per gram, multiply by the USD/LKR rate to get rupees per gram, then multiply by the purity factor for the karat in question.
A worked example
- World spot: USD 3,200 per ounce.
- Per gram: 3,200 ÷ 31.1035 = USD 102.88.
- At LKR 300 to the dollar: Rs. 30,864 per gram of pure gold.
- For 22K: 30,864 × 0.916 = Rs. 28,271 per gram.
Why a weaker rupee helps sellers
When the rupee weakens, each dollar of gold value buys more rupees. Local gold rates can therefore rise even on a day when the world price falls. Sellers benefit; buyers of new jewellery do not.
Gold Buyer Sri Lanka buys gold and silver only. We do not deal in foreign currency or money exchange — the exchange rate matters to us purely as an input to the daily gold rate.
How to use this knowledge
Do not try to trade the currency. Simply check the published local rate on the day you plan to sell, and confirm the buyer applies the same rate to your karat and weight. If the arithmetic is shown to you, you are dealing with a transparent buyer.
